The Problem
Recreate Meta's in-person data center tours, disrupted by COVID-19, as an immersive VR experience, and extend reach to audiences who could never attend in person.
OKR targets: 80% of participants leave with a better understanding of data center operations. 70% report a more favorable opinion of Meta post-experience.
My Role
I scoped and produced the initial pilot for an immersive 360° VR data center tour, designed as a modular platform to enable faster localized iterations without full rebuilds, covering scripts, images, video, and AI-generated voiceovers for scalable localization.
Experience design: I storyboarded the full user flow in Figma and designed the interaction model around VR "superpowers": teleportation between locations, hands-on interaction with objects normally off-limits (pulling out a server, tapping artwork for artist information, a water bottle recycling activity), and overlaid informational content.
UI and visual system: I produced vendor-facing design guidelines for the interactive elements: distinguishing 3D orb-style objects from 2D icon layers, defining teleportation hotspot colors, carousel layouts, and typography. This was done in collaboration with Meta's brand design team to ensure the experience met external-facing standards.
Research and measurement: I worked with the XR Hub Impact Research Lead to design an in-headset post-experience survey, a novel UX challenge given the constraints of the medium. Survey questions were mapped directly to OKR measurement goals, with Likert scales, emoji-based ratings, and checkbox interactions adapted for the VR interface.
Audience and messaging: The experience was designed for politicians, school groups, and community members. A core constraint was variable session length, scaling from a 5-minute tour for a government official to an hour-long session for a classroom, with optional interactive hotspots that can be skipped. Key messaging covered sustainability, energy efficiency, innovation, and local economic impact, with secondary applications in employee onboarding and marketing.
Stakeholder coordination: I managed a complex group spanning the customer team, a third-party research lead, Meta engineering, UXR, legal, procurement, and the production vendor (Unreal Engine build), navigating competing priorities around data collection, pilot scope, and multi-site deployment across NORAM and EMEA.
The Outcome
Piloted with 62 Meta employees across NORAM and EMEA as a proxy audience; designed to scale to community audiences in a subsequent phase.
